Dr Abhishek Mahajan received his Medical (2005) and M.D. (2009) degree from world’s top 150 and India’s top 5 Medical Schools, the Kasturba Medical college, Manipal. He was Cancer Imaging Fellow at Asia’s leading cancer hospital and teaching Institute, the Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH), Mumbai from 2009-2011.
After finishing his fellowship, he joined as faculty at the Tata Memorial Centre (October 2011), Mumbai and served until February 2022 as Professor of Radiology and Consultant radiologist. During his tenure at the Tata Memorial Centre, he took sabbatical year and did his Masters in Translational Cancer Medicine from the King’s College London (2013-2014).
He also completed three visiting observerships: PET-MR 2015 at KCL London, Brain AI lab 2018 Harvard Medical Centre (Martinos) Boston, Robotic Image guided Skull base surgeries 2018, Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, Brisbane. He worked at the Hodgkin's lab (KCL London) on HPV and Hypoxia in H&N cancer and at the Medical Image Processing lab (Guy’s and St Thomas' Hospital London) on sarcopenia and radiomics in NSCLC.
Dr Mahajan started working at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in March 2022 as a Consultant Radiologist with special interest in head and neck, thoracic and neurological malignancies.
Dr Mahajan has been an active contributor to the field of Artificial intelligence, head and neck imaging, neuro-oncoradiology and thoracic oncological imaging literature by authoring over 380 publications (h-index-31, i10 index-73) and 100 abstracts several book chapters and has written/edited textbook of Oncological imaging. He has been an invited speaker on nearly 200 occasions.
He has been PI for 21 trials (1.3. million GBP from department of biotechnology). He was one of the PI for setting up the imaging Bio-Bank Lab at the Tata Memorial Centre. His research is focused on investigating emerging Artificial Intelligence, Deep learning, Radiogenomics and molecular imaging techniques to evaluate various aspects of tumor biology. Instrumental in creating synoptic reporting templates for HNSCC cancer (HN-RADS), Thyroid Ca- TMCRSS, Lung cancer (LC-RADS), implemented NIRADS and BTRADS.
His key works are Modified SHIN grading for thyroid cancer, Scoring system for ETE in PTC, Radiological ECS in HNSCC, Grading for NVB in Ca Tongue, CT thorax in staging work-up of T4+/- N2 HNSCC, Sub-compartmentalisation of High, Modified CAGE RECIST, i-TNM, Cancer imaging protocols during pregnancy.
