Carlo graduated in anatomy and medicine at the University of London, subsequently completing general medicine and medical oncology training in London before achieving doctorate at Imperial College London. 

He has been the recipient of a prestigious Cancer Research UK clinician scientist fellowship, and previously held the position of a senior lecturer within the department of cancer at Imperial College London as well as being a consultant in medical oncology at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

Carlo’s academic and clinical interest is in breast cancer and he is actively involved in developing and initiating translational and clinical research trials, being the chief investigator on a number of studies.

He is a senior medical advisor to the breast cancer charity Roko Cancer Campaign and has worked closely with the London Maggie's Centre, acting as a medical facilitator for a number of their evening courses for cancer suffers, addressing issues such as understanding medical tests, cancer treatments as well as survivorship. 

Carlo co-edited the book ‘ABC of Cancer Care’, aimed at non-specialists and students, which outlines the current management of cancer as well as explaining issues around survivorship and clinical trials. He is a member of the National Cancer Research Institute’s breast group.
