The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre has been recognised for its strong recruitment to a major national breast radiotherapy study, after enrolling 29 patients into the FAST-Forward Boost Trial since opening the study in November 2025.
The study is looking at whether some patients who need an extra boost dose as part of their breast radiotherapy could safely have their treatment shortened from 15 sessions over three weeks to just five days.
If successful, the approach could make treatment more convenient for patients while also helping the NHS use radiotherapy capacity more efficiently.
Researchers will assess whether the shorter treatment is as effective at preventing cancer from returning in the same breast, as well as its side effects and overall cost-effectiveness.
The team’s performance has been recognised by the Clinical Trials Research Unit, which named Clatterbridge its ‘Team of the Month’.
Dr Shaveta Mehta, Consultant Clinical Oncologist, CCC’s Deputy Director for Clinical Research at Clatterbridge and Principal Investigator for the trial, said: “This is a significant achievement and reflects the professionalism, collaboration and commitment shown across the team.
“A huge amount of work went into developing the planning templates, delivering training and identifying and recruiting patients, and I am very grateful to everyone involved.”
Patients interested in taking part in the trial are encouraged to speak to their clinical oncologist or oncology nurse to find out more about eligibility.
