The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust has achieved one of the best scores in England for overall care in the latest annual National Cancer Patient Experience Survey (NCPES), published last week (16 July).
The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre (CCC) achieved 9.24 out of 10 for patients’ satisfaction with their overall care. It was the highest scoring specialist cancer centre and received the third best score compared with all other NHS trusts in England.
The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre scored particularly well for hospital care. Patients rated it one of the best-performing trusts nationally (upper expected range) for all nine questions relating to hospital care and it scored particularly highly on:
- 100% of patients said ‘Care team reviewed the patient's care plan with them to ensure it was up to date’;
- 98% said ‘Patient found advice from main contact person was very or quite helpful’;
- 97% said ‘Hospital staff always did everything they could to help the patient control pain’;
- 96% said ‘Patient was always treated with respect and dignity while in hospital’; and
- 95% said ‘Patient received easily understandable information about what they should or should not do after leaving hospital’.
There were no questions where The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre scored in the lower expected range (i.e. less well-performing).
The National Cancer Patient Experience Survey asks people to rate their care from initially contacting their GP right through to diagnosis, treatment and aftercare. This means that the overall rating reflects patient satisfaction across their whole care pathway, including elements outside a hospital’s control.
The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre’s high overall rating of 9.24 out of 10 indicates that health services in Cheshire and Merseyside – including GP practices, diagnostic centres, and hospitals – work well together in comparison with other areas in England.
Joan Spencer, Chief Executive of The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre and Senior Responsible Officer of Cheshire and Merseyside Cancer Alliance, said:
Achieving one of the highest overall scores in England reflects the outstanding work of our dedicated staff. All of us at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre care passionately about helping people get the very best treatment and support, and as always we will look at where we can improve further to provide an even higher standard of care in future.
Just as importantly, however, the score also reflects our close collaboration with our partners across primary and secondary care to make sure patients receive joined-up support right the way through their cancer diagnosis, treatment and aftercare. It is testament to strong partnership working between GPs, hospitals, community services and Cheshire and Merseyside Cancer Alliance.
Note
Results from the National Cancer Patient Experience Survey 2025 were published on 16 July 2026. The survey included 130 NHS trusts in England and was carried out from November 2025 to February 2026. Surveys were sent to all NHS patients aged 16 and over with a confirmed primary diagnosis of cancer, and who had been discharged from an NHS trust after an inpatient episode or daycase attendance for cancer-related treatment in the months of April, May and June 2025.
The full survey results are available on the National Cancer Patient Experience Survey website.
