An exciting new chapter is on the way for The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre’s chemotherapy treatment unit in Halton Hospital.

The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre and Clatterbridge Cancer Charity are investing more than £1m in the complete modernisation and transformation of the unit, currently known as CANtreat. The work is supported by a £250,000 fundraising appeal by Clatterbridge Cancer Charity

And today (Wednesday 15 July 2026), the Clatterbridge CANtreat chemotherapy unit is relocating to its new temporary home just down the corridor on Ward B3 of Halton Hospital. It will remain there while the current unit is completely refurbished and upgraded. Work is set to start shortly and will be complete later this year.

Moving to Ward B3 has been an exciting and emotional experience for staff on the Clatterbridge treatment unit in Halton, including Ward Manager Laura Selby who has worked there for more than 10 years.

Laura says:

Our Halton treatment unit really is a special place but it is definitely showing its age now. It still has a warm, welcoming atmosphere but the facilities are very tired and we are struggling for space for the rising number of patients coming here each year.

That’s why this new treatment unit is so desperately needed. It will make an enormous difference not just for the 1,500 patients we have now but for the many thousands more who will be treated here for decades to come. We are so grateful to Clatterbridge Cancer Charity and the generosity of all those supporting their fundraising appeal to make this work possible.

The new Clatterbridge treatment unit will have the same welcoming feel and the same expert and caring staff when it opens later this year. It will also have:

  • Extra treatment space and comfortable treatment chairs so more patients can be treated locally in Halton, instead of having to travel to The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre’s other sites.
  • Flexible treatment bays that offer patients the choice between socialising or having more privacy.
  • Research and clinical trials facilities so patients can access trials of new treatments close to home.
  • Bright, modern, high-quality facilities designed for the next generation of cancer treatments.

The new unit has been designed by AFL Architects.

From Thursday 16 July 2026, patients visiting the Clatterbridge CANtreat unit will be directed to its temporary home on Ward B3. Signs will be displayed to help people find the unit.

Note: The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre’s outpatient clinics at Halton Hospital are not moving. Only the services currently provided in CANtreat are moving to Ward B3.
