The Neuro-Oncology team at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre have officially received their Centre of Excellence Award in brain tumour care from the Tessa Jowell Brain Cancer Mission at a glittering awards ceremony on 30th June 2022 in London.

Consultant Clinical Oncologist Dr Shaveta Mehta and Neuro-Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Jill Sokratous received the award on behalf of the Clatterbridge team, together with colleagues from The Walton Centre and North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre who are also part of the same network.

At least 88,000 British people are currently living with a brain tumour. The Tessa Jowell Brain Cancer Mission was founded in 2018 and aims to ensure that everyone with a brain tumour receives the very best care. Being awarded Centre of Excellence status is a mark of the highest quality.

The award demonstrates that The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre and its partners have achieved excellence in brain tumour treatment, research and care. It followed a rigorous assessment process led by a committee of experts in the field and virtual site visits, together with patient feedback about the care they received.

When the Tessa Jowell Brain Cancer Mission announced in December 2021 that the Liverpool Network - which comprises The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, The Walton Centre and North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre - had achieved Centre of Excellence status, they said the assessors were impressed by how closely the three centres work together to make sure people with brain cancer receive seamless care throughout what can be a very complex treatment journey involving diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy.

Dr Shaveta Mehta, Consultant Clinical Oncologist at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, said:

“We are very proud that our patient-centred approach and the high standard of care with close collaboration between different teams in Liverpool and North Wales has been recognised. Being a designated Centre of Excellence and part of the new Tessa Jowell Academy will be a fantastic opportunity to share expertise and learn from other centres, further improving the standard of care and experience of people with brain cancer right across the UK.”

Dr Sheena Khanduri, Medical Director of The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, said:

"Achieving Centre of Excellence status is a fantastic achievement for our Neuro-Oncology service and a real tribute to the whole team's dedication, hard work and patient-focused approach."
