Get to know Lauren
Q. Introduce yourself…
A. #Hellomynameis… Lauren! I am 21-years-old and have just graduated with a degree in Biomedical Science.
Q. Why did you choose to volunteer at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre?
A. I moved from Northern Ireland to Liverpool to study my degree four years ago, due to personal contact with cancer in my family, and I have remained here ever since. I fell in love with the city and what the people had to offer.
During my degree I have developed a love for the medical field. I wanted to develop this further through volunteering at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre - Liverpool.
I felt that volunteering at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre tied my oncological interests from my degree with patient contact, in a prime location. Since then I have been introduced to so many lovely volunteers, patients and NHS staff. I am a very bubbly and sociable person who loves a conversation at reception!
Q. Can you describe how you think your role as a volunteer will contribute directly or indirectly to improving patient care?
A. I am here to lend a hand and be the friendly face people see as they walk through the door! Sometimes a friendly conversation and a smile can make patients feel less anxious and more at ease.
Through volunteering I have been able to increase my observance and use my initiative.
Q. What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
A. ‘Everything happens for a reason’ or ‘what's for you will not pass you, so don't panic’.
Q. If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you have to have with you?
A. My best friend - I need someone to talk to and teamwork is important as a survival skill!
Also, an unlimited source of water, as the body can survive longer without food than water.
Third, a map or compass!
