Q. Introduce yourself…

A. #Hellomynameis Becca. I volunteer at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool around my studies and training to become a Therapeutic Radiographer. I am usually downstairs in the radiotherapy department but I’m quickly learning my way around our new hospital so am always happy to help with directions! I live in Chester with my family and have three young children who keep me very busy around studying and volunteering!

Q. Why did you choose to volunteer at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool?

A. Volunteering at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool is an exciting privilege. I was keen to volunteer to support patients at a hospital where world class cancer care is delivered.

Q. How do you think your role as a volunteer will contribute to improving patient care?

A. I think a volunteer plays a key role in helping people with cancer have a positive and straight forward experience of the hospital. Something as simple as giving directions or walking someone to their appointment can help ease anxiety – particularly during this time when many patients will be visiting the new hospital for the first time.

Q. What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

A. One day you will only be a memory – make sure you’re a good one!

Q. If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you have to have with you?

A. My three children because…

  1. We’d soon be rescued as no one can miss their noise
  2. The middle child is good at catching things (food!)
  3. They’re pretty funny and everyone needs comedy in a crisis

Q. What would people be surprised to discover about you?

A. When I was in South Africa, I once won a pancake eating competition. I ate 21 pancakes, including toppings, in one sitting! I even have the certificate to prove it...

Did you enjoy meeting Becca? Well, we have lots more volunteers you can meet, like Rudy, a postgraduate business student at the University of Liverpool.
