A Clatterbridge clinical research trial has featured in a European TV documentary about the use of viruses in medicine – with a Trust consultant and patient interviewed for it.
Dutch TV programme Focus – the Netherlands equivalent of our Horizon science documentary – looked at Clatterbridge’s Replimune clinical trial, led by Dr Joe Sacco.
The filmmakers from Holland’s public broadcaster made a programme about how viruses were tackling cancer and as no similar clinical research studies are currently taking place in their country, they focussed on a ground-breaking study of oncolytic virology at Clatterbridge.
The TV crew followed patient Lorraine Wilby who finished her two-year treatment in January and who is enjoying very positive results. Her therapy includes her liver tumours being directly injected with a virus-based treatment by CCC’s interventional radiology team, which made them shrink and to stimulate her immune system to attack other cancer cells.
The documentary makers came to Liverpool to film Dr Sacco, an expert in this field of cancer research, explaining the study at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre - Liverpool, and also to take footage of the research team at work.
