Four Clatterbridge consultants have been made Cancer Subspecialty Leads (SSLs) to help to further research across the North West Coast region.

The National Institute for Health Research Clinical Research Network North West Coast (CRN NWC) has made the appointments to support the delivery of its studies.

The new roles go to Dr Laura Cossar, who will support gynaecology; Dr Jeff Smith, whose subspecialty is haemato-oncology; Dr Nasim Ali, who will support sarcoma; and Dr Alia Alchawaf, who has upper GI as her subspecialty.

Clatterbridge already had three SSLs: Prof Christian Ottensmeier (Early Phase), Dr Seamus Coyle (supportive and palliative care) and Dr Carles Escriu (lung), with Dr Shaveta Mehta being Associate Research Lead for Cancer (CRN NWC).

Dr Gillian Heap, Director of Research and Innovation Operations, said: “We are delighted that these four research-active consultants have been appointed to regional roles to push forward and support important studies in their subspecialties.

“Drs Cossar, Alchawaf, Ali and Smith join our other consultants who have already been fulfilling similar roles for the CRN NWC, ably led by Dr Mehta, and this team exemplifies the wide range of talent and experience at Clatterbridge which we can call on to help colleagues across the North West Coast region.”
