Richard Clements, Consultant Radiotherapy Physicist, and his wife Ruth, Radiotherapy Treatment Expert Practitioner, joined the Trust in 1995 and 1998 respectively. After their many years of dedicated service, the couple are hanging up their maroon scrubs and NHS lanyards to enjoy travelling and planning their daughter’s upcoming wedding.
The couple met in 1986 at Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle, where Ruth was a radiographer and Richard was on rotation in her department. After they got married, the couple lived and worked on the other side of the world, spending over two years working in Sydney, Australia before eventually coming back to the UK to continue their careers in Lincoln.
After welcoming their children Alexander, now 27 and Eleanor, 24, the family moved to the Wirral, where Ruth and Richard begin their long tenures at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre.
Richard says; “Over the years, we’ve seen a lot of changes at the Trust, particularly in radiotherapy. It’s a very technologically driven discipline. During our careers here, there have been huge developments in the technology, which have improved outcomes for our patients. That has been the most satisfying part of my role here at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre.
“I will miss working with the team here. In particular, my friend and colleague Chris Lee. Chris and I started on the same day and have formed quite a partnership over the years. I’ve been very lucky to work alongside him, he’s supported my work all this time and I’ve really appreciated that.”
As well as their retirement today, the couple also have other reasons to celebrate this week, marking 32 years of marriage on Thursday 2nd, as well as their daughter’s recent engagement.
Everyone at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust would like to thank Richard and Ruth for their many years of dedicated service and wish them a long, happy and healthy retirement together.
