Clatterbridge Cancer Centre - Liverpool has been awarded the title of Best Public Sector Building by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) in their North West 2022 awards announced on Thursday 19 May 2022.

The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest specialist cancer centres in the UK and the flagship hospital opened in the centre of Liverpool in June 2020 after working with architects and interior designers from leading international practice, BDP.

Dr Liz Bishop, Chief Executive of The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust, says:

“Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool is the culmination of an eight-year vision to bring state-of-the-art facilities and pioneering treatments to a region with one of the highest rates of cancer in the country. BDP’s truly stunning design for the hospital rightly reflects the significance of our flagship site and we’re delighted that the centre has received this award.

“Going through cancer treatment can be difficult – people often feel very unwell when they come here and may be in low spirits. Walking into such a fantastic facility really lifts people and makes a world of difference to patient experience.”

The RICS Awards showcase the most inspirational initiatives and developments in land, property, construction and infrastructure; recognising outstanding achievement, teamwork and companies.

As a regional winner, the new building will now go on to compete at the national Grand Final in London on 21 October 2022.

Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool is an 11-storey building with 110 inpatient beds, housing a wide range of highly specialist cancer care, including pioneering chemotherapy, immunotherapy, gene therapy, haemato-oncology and radiotherapy. It has state-of-the-at facilities for bone marrow transplants, diagnostics and imaging, outpatients, daycase treatments, a Teenage and Young Adult Unit and clinical therapies.

The building opened, on schedule, in the height of the COVID-19 pandemic thanks to the hard work and commitment from expert design and construction partners helping to transform cancer care across Cheshire and Merseyside.

Ged Couser, Principal and architect at BDP, said: “We are incredibly proud to have been given the opportunity to design Liverpool’s first Cancer Hospital, helping to transform cancer care in the region. It’s been a privilege to work with The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust to deliver this building and this latest award win is a testament to the power of committing to collaborative working with the supply chain and community groups throughout the whole design process.”

Patient and staff experience was at the heart of the building’s design. It is a comforting and less clinical-feeling environment for patients and their families, whilst also providing a comfortable working environment for the staff, as well as places for them to rest and share ideas and research.

Dr Liz Bishop continued: “Perhaps the biggest testimony to the new hospital is the reaction from patients and local people. Everyone is extremely proud of and positive about the building, which delivers benefits to the community, far beyond its aesthetics. Liverpool has one of the highest cancer rates in the country, and the centre which is now in its second year enables us to treat more than 30,000 people per year, prolonging and improving their lives.”
