On 1st December, World AIDs Day is marked across the globe as an opportunity to help end the stigma and show solidarity to the HIV community.
Over the past 40 years, advances in medicine and science now mean that people living with HIV can expect to live a long and healthy life. There are the tools available to stop the transmission of HIV for good - in the UK, there are 105,000 people living with HIV and 98% of those people who are taking the correct medication are unable to pass on the virus. However, the HIV community is still vulnerable due to a weakened immune system and those living with HIV are almost twice as likely to develop cancer in their life time.
At The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, there is work being done to support those living with both HIV and cancer. Palliative Care Clinical Nurse Specialist Emma Davey is involved on a number of projects to support the HIV community and create better awareness and support for people who live with both conditions.
