Steve Overend, from Runcorn, was diagnosed with tonsil cancer in 2020. Steve had been suffering with some stiffness in his jaw and was struggling to open his mouth wide enough to eat properly. Steve's cancer was aggressive and fast growing and without timely treatment, Steve would only have lived for a few more months

He was treated at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, receiving chemotherapy and radiotherapy as well as support from our Speech and Language Therapist and Dieticians who helped Steve improve his swallow and supported him with his nutrition.

As Steve was a non-smoker and only enjoyed the occasional drink, experts believe Steve's cancer was most likely caused by the HPV virus.

In this feature with the Daily Mail's Good Health section, Steve tells his story alongside comment from Dr Caroline Brammer, Steve's consultant and a Consultant Clinical Oncologist at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre. Dr Brammer explains more about the treatment for head and neck cancers and the research into why some people develop cancer with the HPV virus and others don't.
